Burundi
country profile
Burundi joined the IF in 2002 and its Diagnostic Trade Integration Study ("DTIS") was validated in December 2003. As a result, five Window II projects were implemented between 2005 and 2008; (i) Standards compliance; (ii) essential oil production for export; (iii) pvc tube production for export; (iv) hothouse flower production; and (v) fruits and vegetables drying. Based on the DTIS Action Matrix, Burundi has prepared a project proposal to address sanitary and phytosanitary measures with the support of the Standards and Trade Development Facility ("STDF") and UNIDO. Under the EIF, Burundi's first priority is to update its DTIS. Burundi prepared a multi-year Tier 1 project which was approved in March 2010. The main objective of the project is to develop national capacities to build up and implement trade policy, establish the institutional coordination structures on trade matters and mainstream trade into the national development plans. The Tier 1 project therefore supports public-private sector coordination on trade issues while the National Steering Committee ("NSC") facilitates the inter-ministerial coordination on trade.
