This project aims to improve the national quality system for Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) requirements by providing world-class conformity assessment services (inspection, standardization and testing). It also aims to improve quality and export competitiveness of targeted value chains (fruit and vegetables, coffee) through compliance with international SPS standards.

 Results

  • 60 participants in a sensitization workshop on SPS legislation in Burundi organized by the Plant Protection Office (Direction de la Protection des Végétaux (DPV)) in Bujumbura in March 2015.
  • 42 participants in a sensitization workshop on SPS legislation in Burundi organized by the DPV in Ngozi in July 2015.
  • Laboratories have received new internationally recognized equipment to analyze products destined for export.
  • 80 people from coffee cooperatives were trained on coffee certification.
  • 8 national experts were recruited to assist factories seeking Fair Trade and Organic certifications.
  • 3 coffee consortiums in INTERCAFE participated in the specialty coffee fair in Gothenburg, Sweden in June 2015.
  • Supported the “Burundi Women in Horticulture” consortium in finalizing their business plan.
