The project aims to comprehensively improve the cross-border business environment by addressing institutional mechanisms, trade-related capacities and strategic trade support infrastructure. The overall objective is to improve the livelihoods and earning potential of those engaged in Cross‑Border Trade (CBT) in Rwanda, of which 74% are women.

 Results

  • A cross‑border trade coordination unit with six field staff has been established. They will work with two staff from TradeMark East Africa to cooperatively implement the project. The cross‑border trade coordination unit has been trained so that they are equipped to carry out their responsibilities.

  • The construction of the cross‑border market in Cyanika has been launched. The bills of quantities for the market centres in Karongi and Burera have been revised.

  • Data collection systems have been harmonized with those of the National Bank of Rwanda to ensure that accurate trade data is collected and can be used for future planning.

  • Two stakeholders' meetings were held at the Ministry of Trade and Industry to revive cross‑border committees and update them on the progress of project implementation.
